Steve McQueen’s “Shame” continues to dominate much of the awards talk this fall, but the question is whether or not the stuffier members of the Academy will give the movie a fair shake. While dark and unrelenting, it’s also a powerful character study, a portrait of a man’s desire for human connection gone horribly wrong. The movie features Michael Fassbender in one of this finest performances to date. And oh yeah, Carey Mulligan sings.
